Gua sha, 刮痧 Guāshā, is an ancient TCM technique. It is a scraping technique for expelling pathological factors. This method is particularly suitable for complaints of the musculoskeletal system, muscle and joint pain, headache, but also for flu infections.
The painful area of the body is pretreated with oils, then the surface of the body is scraped with a curved and rounded tool. A porcelain spoon, a coin, rounded animal horns, jade or the like is recommended. The rounded edge is pressed onto the oiled skin and moved along the muscles or the meridians in approx. 10 to 15 cm long strokes. It is scraped until there is a clear discoloration and redness under the skin.
